Simple Trick to keep your ribbon from fraying for good, from Fabric Envy

If you're anything like me you hate, I mean HATE ribbon fray! About four years ago my friend Sarah shared this quick and easy tip with me for heat sealing your ribbon. All it takes is one simple, inexpensive, and very hot item: a wood burning tool.

Who knew? If you're cutting a lot of ribbon or making bows it speeds up the process a bunch because it cuts and seals the ribbon at the same time! Three cheers, I ♥ time savers! Plus you'll get a really nice, crisp and clean, professional looking edge.

Seriously this is all you need to do:

Plug in and turn on your wood burning tool. It will come with several different tips just use the chiseled edge tip. It's the one that comes already attached.
Lay your ribbon out and on a heat friendly surface (I cut mine on a piece of table glass, or you can use a cutting board. It just needs to be on a surface that you wouldn't mind getting some burn marks on.
Measure out where you want to cut/seal the ribbon, start at the top and apply pressure in a downward motion--just like what you would do if you were using an exacto knife or box cutter.
Bam, that's it you're done!

I made this ~~simple~~ cheesy video if you want to actually see it done. I've included some tips for making no-slip ribbon covered alligator clips too.

You can pick up a wood burning tool at Walmart or any craft store for around $10.00. Hope you enjoy never having to deal with fraying ribbon again!

Hello Pilgrim by Lizzy House is here! I love the fresh designs in this collection. Now that I've got my hot little hands on it I'm trying to decide what to do. I'm really loving the Urban 9 patch quilt along that's going on over at Sew Kind of Wonderful. Jenny's is such a talented designer and I'm dying to try her Urban Deco block with her Quick Curve Ruler. Just look:

Some days I feel like this

Yesterday was one of those days. It started off with my darling seven month old refusing to take a nap. She was howling and exhausted so I decided to take a drive to try and get her to sleep. I had all four kiddos with me because it's Mid-Winter break. We piled in the car, in our pj's, infact I didn't even put on shoes :0 and we headed off. After about ten minutes the baby finally fell asleep and I was en-route to home. Unfortunately we got in a car accident.....

Luckily no one was hurt, and truth be told it really wasn't my fault. Someone back out of their driveway into the right side of my car while I was driving down their street. Turns out it was a friend from church and I felt so bad. It was soggy and rainy, oh how I love Seattle weather (insert sacastic eye roll here). Once I assessed that everyone was okay I got out of the car to check out the damage. Yeah, I was really regreting the fact that I was in my PJ's with no shoes on at this point--freezing!!!!

Anyhoo no-one hurt, just our cars, and lots of adrenaline pumping stress. So I came home and tried to chill. Ha, we all know that's pretty much impossible with four kiddos 6 and under! Here's how the rest of my day went:

2 year old is potty training she has an accident all over the floor upstairs--clean it up move on
Spend forever on the phone with the insurance companies while kids beg me for snacks and terrorize each other because I'm certain they feel it's their life's quest to reek havoc when mommy's on the phone
Make lunch, nobody wants what I've fixed
Pack orders for the Fabric Shop (this part I enjoyed)
Then I heard a ewwww scream from my two year old who had climbed behind my couch to pee all over my brand new white curtains. grrr
While ironing my freshly washed curtains my iron leaked brown rusty liquid on a five inch section. Perfect! (time for another sarcastic eye-roll moment)

Minus the car accident and the rogue iron the other stuff is typical. There are days when I've looked and felt like a crazed cat, but luckily most of my days I feel like this:

Or at least I'm trying to feel like Wonder Woman. Not in the "I can do it all" sense, because I certainly know that's not possible, nor do I wish it were. I'm just talking about the confidence and strength aspect. I know who I am, what I believe in, and what I want for me and my family.

Conclusion: ~~bring on~~ if I have to I can deal with the "the crazed kitty" days.

Sliced Sewing Competition from Moda Bake Shop {Fabric Envy}

Have your heard about Sliced? It's a super fun sewing competition being hosted over at the ever-inspiring Moda Bake Shop. Auditions are now being accepted and the prize packages are simply amazing!

Free Photo Tile Tutorial from Fabric Envy

I love to take pictures! I picked up a real camera (by that I mean a nice DSLR) in 2006 and have been hooked ever since. From the moment I heard the first shutter actuation I couldn't put the thing down! I wanted to take classes right away but because my hubby worked full time and went to law school in the evenings it wasn't possible. So instead I bought books, lots of books on photoshop, understanding the cameras mechanics, and became a member of online forms to perfect my skills. I practiced like a maniac and much like a writer writes each day to improve, I took pictures (hundreds of them) every day.

I started my photography business, Your Every Color Photography (named after one of my all time favorite songs by Train) four years ago and have enjoyed it so much! I'm currently only booking seniors as I've decided to take a break to pursue my fabric shop. Just for fun here's one of my favorite senior shots:

So why the heck am I telling you all this? This is supposed to be a "fabric" blog after all...
Because I've had lots of requests for tutorials and tips for better photographs recently. So I thought I'd start with a photo/craft project and perhaps in the future I can do a few posts on my photographing techniques, as well as photoshop tips.

Okay enough with my rambling! Onto the tutorial

There's really not much to it for these tiles. I've been making them for a few years now and they were always a hit with my clients. In fact, I taught a class on how to make these at a local Scrapbooking store not too long ago and we had such good fun together.

Here are the basic instructions:

If you want to add embellishments like ribbon or scrapbook paper just cut them to size, and keep them from falling off by using hot glue or double sided stick tape on the back of your tile. You can also purchase small 4x4 tavertine tiles and make coasters or mini art. The possibilities are endless.

The image below is one I took of the Salt Lake Temple a couple years ago. I distressed it in photoshop, cropped it to a 12x12, printed it at Costco, and then made another photo tile. Sorry I don't have a pic of the completed project but it really is gorgeous.

Introducing Designer Jenny Pedigo of Sew Kind Of Wonderful { Fabric Envy }

Do you remember last week when I mentioned I'd be introducing someone very talented? Well today's the day, and I'm pleased to announce this talented designer also happens to be a friend (aren't I lucky!).

As some of you know I'm a bit of a photographer too, so when my friend Jenny approached me about photographing her quilts I was very eager to help out. You see, Jenny has created a new quilting ruler called the Quick Curve Ruler. Yep, it's her very own invention and she's dreamed up some amazing quilts using it.

The Quick Curve Ruler is her own innovative design that allows you to seamlessly cut curves and create some really unique looks with your sewing. Trust me when I tell you that these quilts are gorgeous! When she brought them all to my studio I was trying not to drool. Not only was her quilting simply perfection (yes she's a long arm quilter too!) but her patterns are all so charming in their simplicity and creativity. I love the modern looks she has created with this totally fun new way to piece and sew with curves.

It was such a fun photo-shoot and it has been so interesting to see the process go from pictures to actual quilt patterns. Here are a few shots of some of her divine quilts!

Just a little somethin' amazing {Fabric Envy}

Today's post is completely unrelated to fabric but I thought I would share something I ran into on a friends Facebook account. If you've got a moment to spare, play this YouTube video--you won't be disappointed. I sincerely appreciate good talent particularly great vocal talent and this group has it. The bass line is stunning and the key change later in the song give's me goosebumps. I love this arrangement. I think I've watched this video a gazillion times and I'm sure I'll watch it a gazillion more! Love the way music brings such a good spirit to my day!

I survived Food Poisoning! Oh Happy Monday!

I hope you all had a much better weekend than me :) Unfortunately I got food poisoning late Thursday evening and pretty much wanted to die until Sunday morning, yuck! Nursing a baby, while at the vengeful mercy of some disgusting food borne bacteria is horrid. But alas I am 90% recovered, just wishin' for my energy levels to snap back.

How To: Free Fabric Flower and Headband Tutorial from Fabric Envy

I love making fabric flowers! There are so many ways to use them: from clothing, to hair or bag accessories, to home decor, and the list go on. I love using this particular design to make my little girls hair flowers. I usually sew them to an alligator clip for my 2 and 6 year old. For my little six month old I’ve attached the flower to a piece of Riley Blake Ruffle Elastic in Hot Pink and then made it into a headband, and oh boy (or should a say girl) is it cute!

You could easily use scraps to make these flowers, but because I had very specific color schemes in mind I used these Fat Quarter bundles: Lark by Amy Butler, Secret Garden by Sandi Henderson, and Grand Bazaar by Patty Young. Because it uses so little fabric I’ve got lots of material left over to make little wallets, a clutch, or whatever else I can dream up!

This tutorial will show you how to make the flower. You can use the template to make three different sizes: Small-2 inch, Medium- 2 ½ inch, and Large-3 inch.

Supply List:

Print and cut out the template (you can download the full size template here, or by clicking on the picture) for your desired flower size on heavy cardstock that can easily be used for tracing.
Scissors
Fabric scraps, for the large flower they need to be at least 3 ¼” x 3 ¼”
A set of cover buttons: Size 30 (large flower), 24 (medium flower), and 20 (small flower). If you do not know how to cover a button you can check out my video tutorial for making cover button earrings here.
Sewing needle and thread

**Cutting the Fabric**

A Fat Quarter is approximately 18”x22”. I began by folding it in half (short side to short side) and placed it on my cutting mat. Because I wanted to pin and cut out all three flower sizes at once with as little fabric waste as possible I then cut my material at 6 ½ inches and then in a half again at 3 ¼ inches. Now I have two pieces of fabric measuring 3 ¼” x 22”. I’ve kept the fabric folded in half the entire time so that what I see is a 3 ¼ x 11 inch piece that will hold all three of my flowers perfectly with very little waste.

Keep your fabric folded and pin all three flower templates into place ( the picture shows all three different sizes, you can easily print out extra templates and cut them all the same size during this step). This will allow you to cut out two of each size at once. You’ll end up with a total of six petals. Be sure to save pieces of your scraps to make the cover buttons!
Do this with the rest of your fabric assortment until you have at least 12 petals to complete one flower. I cut out 36 flower petals because I wanted to make all three sizes at once. Just cut out 12 of the same sized template if you want to make one flower.

**Putting the Flower Together**

Get out your needle, and thread it with a long piece of coordinating thread.
Take a moment to decide how you want the colors to look. Once you’ve chosen how to blend your fabrics you’ll begin to layer the flower.
Stack up 4 petals for the base of the flower
Take 4 petals and fold into a heart shape (in half 2 times)

Now take your needle and thread and grab one of your heart shaped petals and match it up to the petal shape underneath. Tack it down with a simple stitch.
Next take another petal and place on the opposite side from the first petal and tack it down.
Now add the third petal, and then the fourth to the opposite side of the third and tack down. I used a simple “X” stitch
Do this one more time for a double-layered flower. The thickness makes it super cute!
Now that the petals are all sewn together set aside and make your cover button. If you never covered a button you can check out my video tutorial here. (www.fabricenvy.blogspot.com, and click on tutorials)

Now it’s time to add the button to your petals and make the flowers center. Sew the button on by coming up through the bottom of the flower first with your needle and thread and insert it through the shank. Continue to sew until the button is firmly in place.
Phew, now you have a beautiful flower! If you cut out more petals to make the medium and small flowers, then hop to it!

**To Make this flower**

You’ll need the same amount of petals for this one: 12
Stack up 4 petals for the base of the flower
Fold a few of your petals into heart shapes
This time instead of tacking them down on opposite sides you’ll layer them on top of each other so that each petal is showing only half of the heart-shape.

Tack down petals a few at a time and finish the 8^th petal by tucking it under the first until it all matches up. Because the flower uses all 8 petals in one layer there’s no need to do a second set.
Now add your cover button and you’re done!

**Bonus Make Flower Headband**

Now that you’ve got a totally gorgeous flower on hand, you need to decide what the heck you’re going to do with it. I couldn’t help myself and made yet another headband for my daughters to wear. I used Ruffled elastic by Riley Blake in Hot Pink for the band. You can pick it up in my shop, here for only $1.00 a yard!
Here’s a little guide to help you know what size to cut your elastic:

I cut my elastic at 17.5” to fit my two year old, then brought the two ends together and let it overlap by a ¼ of an inch to give me room to stitch it together.

Once the band is made you can sew your flower on. To finish it off I’ve hot glued on a very small piece of felt on the underside to cover my stitching/work and make it soft on my daughter’s head.

Now sit back and admire your creation you crafty chic!

Welcome to Paris + a Giveaway from Fabric Envy

Paris has always been such a fascinating place to me. The Louvre', the Palace of Versailles, the Cathedral of Notre Dame, the Eiffel tower, and the list goes on. But more than these incredible landmarks Paris is host to a very rich and intriguing cultural history, and for me I can't help but think of all things romantic and fashionable :)

Have I ever been there? No, so perhaps I don't really know what I'm talking about lol, but a girl can dream right?

There are some fabric collections that you just can't stop thinking about the first time you see them. They are the ones who's designs are so fresh and beautiful that you can picture them easily making gorgeous home dec, sewing, and quilting projects. The Heirloom collection by Joel Dewberry fits into this category hands down!

One of my fav customers Dawn, from Designed by Dawn Nicole has created the cutest little girls dress using only four fat quarters from my shop! She purchased the Heirloom Fat Quarter Bundle and whipped up this darling little number. You can snag her tutorial on her blog here. She was also featured on Craft Gossip for this tut too! Happy New Year! I've been MIA from blog for the last couple weeks enjoying some much needed family time! But now it's back to work and I'm pleased to let you know that I received Modern Whimsy in the mail today--I could have kissed the delivery man :)

Christmas Traditions from Fabric Envy

Can you believe there's only 3 days left until Christmas? My kiddos are so excited, and me too! I love this time of year. Everything seems to slow down and the things that are important to me take on a greater clarity. Yes I know there's always the hustle and bustle that abounds with the shopping, wrapping, and holiday parties, but don't you feel like you take it all in more? The smells, the music, the atmosphere, friends and family, it's all just so inviting. I try to get most of my Christmas shopping done throughout the year and stash gifts in the nooks and crannies of my closet. That way during those last few weeks I can try and soak it all up. It doesn't always work out the way, but I try....

I thought it would be fun to post a couple little things my kids enjoy during the Christmas season. I say little because they're simple touches to add to the magic of Christmas.

This is our Santa plate. I have it on display in my kitchen during December and on Christmas Eve the kids layout their cookies and carrots for the reindeer on it. I did this with some friends at church about 6 years ago or so. We just bought white craft pens and picked up some cheap red plates. The kids get really excited about this special plate just for Santa.

This little poem was given to me by a friend a few Christmas's ago and we've loved it since. We like to bring this to our friends with a plate of Christmas cookies. On Christmas Eve just before we head off to bed the kids run outside and sprinkle the Reindeer Food all over the front yard. They all get so ecstatic about the glitter!

I decided this year to spruce things up a bit and designed this cute tag instead of just typing it up and printing it. You can download the free PDF here. It will print two tags on one 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. Tie or staple this tag to a bag of some oatmeal mixed with glitter and you're ready for a splendid yet simple Christmas tradition to be born.

This year we're going to have a little Nativity Puppet show thanks to Sarah Jane and her free download on her blog.

Isn't it just adorable? Her artwork is simply delightful. I have a few pieces of her Children at Play Collection on my website. I wish I had more! I can't wait to see what her next line looks like. I've heard rumor of spunky girl pirates.....

I am so excited to welcome this great pattern designer to my shop! Shwin Designs creates the most adorable clothing for little girls (and sometimes boys and grown-up girly's too). Seriously I would wear most of it and I'm talking about the little girl patterns. She is super talented and can whip anything up in a jiffy. I wish my brain worked like hers when I looked at fabric. Yes, I get inspired to sew when I see a certain print I just have to have, but then I turn to a pattern for direction. Shwin designs dreams the whole thing up all on her own! So after I came across Shwin Designs blog I knew I wanted her to design something using my fabric. I offered her two yards of her choice from the store. She chose Balloons in Aqua from the Children at Play Collection by Sarah Jane and the Neutral Stripe from the Taza Collection by Dena Designs. Now just look at what she came up with!

I Hate Making Bias Tape!

How to Make Fabric Button Earrings by Fabric Envy

Hi all I hope you had a fabulous Thanksgiving holiday and let's not forget Black Friday weekend! I'm here with a quick and easy video tutorial on how to create your very own fabric button earrings. I started making these button earrings about four years ago and even had a successful etsy store selling them. I closed the shop after a year and a half because things got too crazy in my personal life (meaning I got too crazy about fabric and sewing!) So here I am now trying to get my fabric shop off to a great start and hoping to share a little bit of my crafting knowledge with my blog readers.

To make these darling fabric cover button earrings you will need:

E-6000 Glue. This glue is super-duper strong and will create a forever bond, but be careful it's stinky stuff and you need to use it in a well ventilated area. You can pick it up at JoAnn's or Michaels and I've even seen it at Walmart.

One set of cover buttons. I prefer a size 24 for my earrings but really the size is entirely up to you. You can purchase these at your local craft store. If you've never covered a button before you'll need to purchase the package that comes with the cover button tool. The buttons from the craft store will still have the shank on the back and this will need to be removed with a pair of pliers. If you decide to make more I'd go for flat back cover buttons. I like to purchase mine from the Three Dancing Magpies on etsy. They're customer service is great and they're always fast with their shipping.

You'll also need some earring posts. The 10mm post are the most versatile in size because they'll fit cover buttons as small as a size 20 and still work for larger buttons as well. I like to purchase the surgical steel posts from Rings & Things . You can pick yours up at JoAnn's or Michaels but be aware that these do contain nickel so if you have a nickel allergy they won't be right for you. Not to mention the posts are just not as sturdy as the those from Rings & Things.

You'll need a small amount of scrap fabric 2" wide but even less if you're making size 20 buttons. The fabric I used in the video was Bari J.'s Dusty Rose la Salle du Soleil from her Paris Apartment collection. I cut fabric as small a 1/4 yard in my shop so you can pick this up for a great price, use it for a project and then use the scraps for darling earrings.

So here it is my simple video tutorial for making cute cover button earrings. BTW I felt like a big cheez-head while making this video--it's okay if you laugh I did too :)

You can also make great large earrings, necklaces, rings, hair pins, and more.

Envy: Fall Quilt Market Houston 2011

That's right I've got Envy for all the peeps out there who got to go to Fall Quilt Market in Houston. I wasn't able to attend because of my beautiful baby girl, in fact I should say I chose not to attend. My cute little muffin needed mommy so market will have to wait until next spring for me. Instead I thought I'd go ahead and reminisce a little, and post some pictures from Spring Market in Salt Lake City.

Salt Lake was my first Quilt Market experience--a complete whirlwind! I was so overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices presented, but more than anything inspired and motivated by it all.

If you're reading this blog it's probably because you're a good friend who's trying to support me in my new business venture:), or like me you're totally obsessed with fabric and can't get enough of all the juicy details. So, like me instead of following Hollywood celebrities your icons are peeps like Amy Butler, Anna Maria Horner, Tula Pink, Pat Bravo, Sandi Henderson......and the list goes on. Admittedly I was star-struck when I got a chance to meet so many of the brilliant designers behind the fabric's we love.

Anna Maria Horner was so down to earth. She had her darling daughter with her and showcased her amazing Loulouthi collection.

Amy Butler was super encouraging regarding my opening up a new online shop. She also mentioned she loved the name Fabric Envy. I felt like jumping up and down at that moment, but luckily restrained from making a total fool of myself. For some reason I think an 8 months pregnant women jumping up and down in front of Amy Butler might have looked a little strange :) Do you think she'd design a special seal I could put on my website that says something like: Amy Butler Love's the name Fabric Envy? Ha, wishful thinking, but believe it--she liked it!

I also had a great time with Patricia Bravo. The picture above is a little craptastic but It's proof of our awesome impromptu meeting. She introduced herself while I was browsing her stunning booth and found out I was in the process of opening up a new fabric shop. She sat down right then and gave me oodles of advice. She was uber generous. Pat Bravo is such a successful women and I felt honored she would take time during crazy Quilt Market to chat with me:) If you ever read this thanks Pat for all your stellar tips!

I also had lots of fun meeting Joel Dewberry and his wife who use to live right here in my neck of the woods in Washington. Joels Heirloom collection is just breathtaking. Sandi Henderson and her husband were a fantastic pair too. Her booth was so gorgeous. Wish my living room looked like that!

It was a great experience. Can't believe it's already been six months since Salt Lake. Ever notice how life gets kinda blurry when there's a newborn in the house? Anyway can't wait for Market in the Spring next year. By then the store will be six months new and hopefully booming, right?

Perfection = Delay

Could she be any more beautiful? She is perfection.

This gorgeous baby is my fourth child and third daughter who is now 12 weeks old. I took these pictures when she was just three weeks and If anything she is even more angelic now.

So.... perfection, cutie-pie toes, chubby cheeks, and blissful slumbers = delays. The fabric shop still isn't open, but I promise we really are coming soon and oh boy it's going to be worth it!
