TAG! + This weeks winner for the Curious Nature Half Yard Bundle! {Fabric Envy}

My friend Jenny, designer and author of the Sew Kind of Wonderful blog tagged me over a week ago. I don't generally dish about myself, but I thought it was about time I finally played along! Here are the questions I've been asked

1.) What is your favorite snack?
I'm completely addicted to Nutella!  Just give me a spoon and I'm content. Coupled with a bottle of Odwalla Superfood and I'm in heaven!

2.) Besides quilting what your next favorite hobby?
It's no secret that I love photography, but I'm also really into crocheting.

3.) If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
This is a hard question for me to answer because there are so many places I've never been, that I imagine all the time would make the perfect getaway. I dream of living anywhere tropical where I could lounge on the beach forever... Of the places I've lived I wouldn't mind moving back to Charleston South Carolina. Great people, rich with history, beauty, and sunshine!

4.) Where does your inspiration come from?
Hmmm inspiration for what project? It's sourced from lots areas depending on the genre. If it's a quilt I let the fabric help me decide what to do with it. Most of the time I like to check out what some of my favorite designers are doing like Pat Bravo, Amy Butler, Anna Maria Horner, and Joel Dewberry. Pretty much anything they do inspires me to create.
5.) How much fabric are you hoarding right now?
Ha, if we count the fabric store, it's a lot!!!! But my own personal stash is overflowing too. Lets just say I've got enough stashed to make clothing for my kiddos for an entire year, and enough fabric bundles set aside for at least 20 quilts. I obviously love to buy fabric, I hoarded so much it's turned into a fabric store!

6.) Do you where makeup, and if you do, how often do you put it on?
Yes! I love make-up, another product I can't seem to stop buying. Unfortunately I only end up "putting on my face" a few times a week. Life with the four kiddos, the fabric store, church responsibilities, and occasional photography clients makes things a little to hectic for make-up everyday. The only make-up I've got on now is my "I slept in it last night because I was too lazy to wash my face before bed" kind.
7.) What is your favorite part of the quilting process?
Buying the fabric, hello!
8.) Are you a part of any local Quilt Guilds?
Nope, but I should be :)

9.) How many quilting projects are you currently working on?
I'm working on two quilt tops right now with Curio and Hello Luscious

10.) If we went to a movie, what type of movie would you pick out?
My favorite movies are one's that pull at your heart strings, make you think or motivate you to be better. One of my all time favorites is August Rush--just watch it, it's amazing!

11.) If we went out for dinner, what restaurant would you pick?
If we could fly back to Utah I would pick The Magic Wok. I waited tables there all through high school. The restaurant has been open for 25 years and the food is so fantastic! I can't really eat Chinese food anywhere else and enjoy it. I like it so much that when I'm pregnant I have dreams that we've figured out a way to FedEx overnight it and still have it be fresh.

Whew I'm long winded!  Good thing i don't dish about myself very often. Three cheers to you if you made it through the post.  Now onto the important part.

The winner of the Half Yard Bundle of Curious Nature is:

Curious Nature fabrics are my very favorite right now! I'd love some to make my son a graduation quilt!

Hunger Games.......Worth Loving! {Fabric Envy}

The wait is over, Let Games Begin!

Bear with me while I post about something completely unrelated to fabric. Are you guys as excited for the Hunger Games movie premier as I am? It's seems like everyone is talking about it and I wanted to share my excitement too.  About three years ago I picked up Hunger Games and was immediately captivated by the story. The unrealistic and yet very realistic plot, the well developed depth of each character, the thrill ride of one intense moment after another, the tears, and on, and on make Hunger Games and entirely addictive journey. The dystopian setting provides the perfect platform for a very emotionally gripping story. These books are about survival, love, revolution, and the heartache and brutality of war. They're exciting, creative, and absolutely "worth loving".

I hope the movie does the book justice! The preview looks amazing. I'm also pretty excited to see what the hair and makeup artists have dreamed up for the outlandish Capitol citizens. From the picture of the character Effie Trinket below, I'd say they're on the right track. So if you haven't already done so, put down your sewing and schedule an uninterrupted weekend to let yourself indulge in the Games.

"May the odds be ever in your favor!"

"Pin"spiration!

Are you obsessed with Pinterest? I am!!!!! Today I thought I'd share a great furniture refurbish that I found inspiring or as I've heard it called "pin"spiring!

Just look at this before and after. Sawdust and Embryos are bloggers with serious talent. You can find the entire tutorial/project here.

Do you recognize the print? It's Rose Bouquet in Sky from Joel Dewberry's Heirloom collection. I just happen to have it in stock, imagine that!

It really is such a gorgeous print. I want to do something with it but I just haven't decided what. What would you do?

Lace Collars? Yes, Please! Iron On's for baby girl and more new embellishments at Fabric Envy

I'm so excited to let you know about some new products that arrived yesterday afternoon! Aren't those Lace Collars by Basic Grey just completely adorable? I'm head-over-heels for these and can't wait to use them. Watch out onesies cause here I come with my hot iron and the will to "prettyfy" everything! These are going to make such simple baby shower gifts, you can't go wrong!

It's easy to apply the collars:

1. Heat iron
2. Set onesie, or any shirt, bag, or other sewing project on your ironing board
3. Position collar on item and cover with a thin pressing cloth
4. Press (not moving back and forth)
5. Allow to cool down. Add a simple top-stitch to keep from lifting.

That's it!

Also just in-stock from Basic Grey I've got two new quilt patterns: Sweet Starlet and Hello Zig Zag. They're both featuring Hello Luscious but would look great with almost any other collections.

I've also stocked these super fun Vintage Canvas labels. Don't they look great on those jars? I also think they would make a cute addition to a bag or other sewing project.

Curio by Basic Grey Giveaway at Fabric Envy!

Giveaway now closed. Come back soon to see what our next giveaway has to offer!
In honor of National Craft Month we're doing a giveaway each week. Last week's winner, Maureen, won two fabulous Fat Quarter Bundles from the Hello Luscious and Freshcut collections. This week's giveaway is for a Curio Charm Pack and the gorgeous Basic Grey Polished Blossom in Buttercup. I love the antique charm of the Curio collection and can envision a million possibilities for the flower.

I reserved a Layer Cake for myself when I purchased the collection. Finally after months of waiting for some time I cut into it this weekend. I said I had "some time", which really means a "very little bit" of time, so I opted to use the  Easy Bake pattern from Cluck Cluck Sew. It is a super quick pattern and would make a great first quilt for beginners. Here's a picture of one of my blocks.

Now it's your chance to win a little Curio

To enter check-out my shop and tell me what your favorite pre-cut or pattern is.

Simple Trick to keep your ribbon from fraying for good, from Fabric Envy

If you're anything like me you hate, I mean HATE ribbon fray! About four years ago my friend Sarah shared this quick and easy tip with me for heat sealing your ribbon. All it takes is one simple, inexpensive, and very hot item: a wood burning tool.

Who knew? If you're cutting a lot of ribbon or making bows it speeds up the process a bunch because it cuts and seals the ribbon at the same time!  Three cheers, I ♥ time savers! Plus you'll get a really nice, crisp and clean, professional looking edge.

Seriously this is all you need to do:

  • Plug in and turn on your wood burning tool. It will come with several different tips just use the chiseled edge tip. It's the one that comes already attached.
  • Lay your ribbon out and on a heat friendly surface (I cut mine on a piece of table glass, or you can use a cutting board. It just needs to be on a surface that you wouldn't mind getting some burn marks on.
  • Measure out where you want to cut/seal the ribbon, start at the top and apply pressure in a downward motion--just like what you would do if you were using an exacto knife or box cutter.
  • Bam, that's it you're done!
I made this simple cheesy video if you want to actually see it done. I've included some tips for making no-slip ribbon covered alligator clips too.

You can pick up a wood burning tool at Walmart or any craft store for around $10.00.  Hope you enjoy never having to deal with fraying ribbon again!

Also, a great big thanks to all of you who entered the giveaway this week.

The winner of the Hello Luscious and Freshcut FQ Bundles is:

Are you curious about Curious Nature, by David Butler? {Fabric Envy}

Are you curious about "Curious Nature"? Well look no further here's the scoop: Curious Nature is a sophisticated fabric collection that just arrived on my doorstep yesterday morning. From the moment I previewed it in the Fall after Quilt Market, I knew it had to become a part of my inventory. Parson Gray is David Butler's design company and Curious Nature is his first textile collection. And in case you were wondering, David is Amy Butler's husband! He's going to make a big splash with this collection. Finally cool fabrics for the "man" in your life.

Yep the Butler's rock!

You can pick up great Fat Quarter and Half Yard bundles in my shop. They include my favorite 4 prints from the collection.

You can download the Free PDF Pattern for the Curious Nature Bullseye Quilt here

Here's what David has to say about Curious Nature:

"The collection is a folk modern interpretation of natural elements. It weaves together a balance of sophisticated hand-drawn patterns inspired by Japanese indigo and mid-century fine art. The palette is grounded in richly muted nature tones evoking clear night skies, deep forest & dark ocean balanced by bone ivory & oyster grays."

Plan and simple: Curious Nature = Cool
